Ahmedabad: In what would be seen as an embarrassment for the Congress in Gujarat, its two-time Member of Parliament (MP) from Jamnagar Vikram Madam on Thursday conceded defeat. Vikram gave in to his niece Poonam Madam, who is contesting on a BJP ticket even before the May 16 counting date.
Vikram, a prominent Ahir community leader, told mediapersons in Saurashtra that he would lose the elections by some 30,000 votes and called upon his supporters not to bet on the poll results.
The BJP got a boost during the run-up to the state assembly elections when it managed to rope in Vikram's neice, Poonam, a Congress legislator, into the party ranks. She was then given the mandate by BJP to contest against her uncle in the Lok Sabha polls.
Jamnagar recorded 57.42 per cent polling on Wednesday and was considered a safe seat for the Congress.
