France vows to hit back at Islamic State as Paris bleeds

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for six attacks that took place across Paris on Friday night. Nearly 128 people were killed and 200 in the coordinated attacks.

Noting that the coordinated attacks carried out by eight gunmen across Paris on Friday night was organized from abroad by Islamic State with internal help,  French President Francois Hollande on Saturday vowed to hit the banned terror organisation  hard.

Over 128 people were killed and 200 injured in attacks carried out by masked gunmen at various places in Paris. The death toll is expected to rise as scores of those injured are critical, French Envoy to India Francois Richier told India Today.

No Indian casualty has been reported in the attacks so far. External Affairs Sushma Swaraj tweeted,"I have spoken to Indian Ambassador in France. He has informed me that all Indians are safe. France has advised citizens to stay indoors."

According to latest reports, authorities have closed the Eiffel Tower for public indefinitely in the wake of the Paris attacks. Border areas have been sealed amid a massive operation to locate and neutralise any remaining terrorist, who may have escaped after carrying out the attacks. French authorities confirmed that the attacks were carried out by eight gunmen but fear some more militants may still be inside the country waiting to launch yet another round of mayhem.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying it sent militants strapped with suicide bombing belts and carrying machine guns to various locations in the heart of the capital. It was the worst such attack in Europe since the Madrid train bombings of 2004, in which 191 died and second in Paris in 10 months. In January, 12 people were killed when militants attacked the office of Charlie Hebdo newspaper.

Act of war'

The attacks, described by Hollande as an act of war, were designed to show the country would remain in danger as long as it continued its current policies, Islamic State said in a statement. After being whisked from the stadium near the blasts, Hollande declared a national state of emergency - the first since World War II. Border controls were temporarily re-imposed to stop perpetrators escaping.

The Paris metro railway was closed and schools, universities and municipal buildings were ordered to stay shut on Saturday. However some rail and air services are expected to run.

Syrian passport found near body of attacker

A Syrian passport was found near the body of one of the suicide bombers who blew himself up near a Paris soccer stadium, Reuters quoted sources close the investigation, as saying.

"The attacks at a stadium, concert hall and cafes and restaurants in northern and eastern Paris were an act of war committed by Daesh (Arabic acronym for Islamic State) that was prepared, organized and planned from outside (of France) with help from inside France," Hollande said.

IS releases video warning France

Earlier, the Islamic State released an undated video threatening to attack France if it continues to participate in fight against the group in Syria and else where.

The group's foreign media arm, Al-Hayat Media Centre, made the threat through a militant who called on French Muslims to carry out attacks.

"As long as you keep bombing you will not live in peace. You will even fear traveling to the market," said the bearded Arabic-speaking militant, flanked by other fighters.

When gunshots rattled Paris' calm night

A Paris city hall official said four gunmen systematically slaughtered at least 87 young people at a rock concert at the Bataclan concert hall. Anti-terrorist commandos eventually launched an assault on the building. The gunmen detonated explosive belts and dozens of shocked survivors were rescued.

Emergency services were mobilised, police leave was cancelled, 1,500 army reinforcements were drafted into the Paris region and hospitals recalled staff to cope with the casualties.

PARIS/CAIRO: A Syrian passport has been found near the body of one of the suicide bombers who blew himself up on Friday near a Paris soccer stadium, sources close the investigation of the deadly attacks in Paris said.

Meanwhile, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks that killed 127 people in Paris, saying it sent militants strapped with suicide bombing belts and carrying machine guns to various locations in the heart of the capital.

The attacks, described by France's president as an act of war, were designed to show the country would remain in danger as long as it continued its current policies, Islamic State said in a statement.

Islamic State claims responsibility for Paris attacks; says France remains top target

Islamic State claimed responsibility on Saturday for attacks that killed 127 people in Paris, saying it sent militants strapped with suicide bombing belts and carrying machine guns to various locations in the heart of the capital. The attacks, described by France's president as an act of war, were designed to show the country would remain in danger as long as it continued its current policies, Islamic State said in a statement.

"To teach France, and all nations following its path, that they will remain at the top of Islamic State's list of targets, and that the smell of death won't leave their noses as long as they partake in their crusader campaign," said the group.

French President Francois Hollande said the violence was organised from abroad by Islamic State with internal help.

"Faced with war, the country must take appropriate action," he said, without saying what that meant.

The attacks at a stadium, concert hall and cafes and restaurants in northern and eastern Paris were "an act of war committed by Daesh that was prepared, organised and planned from outside (of France)" with help from inside France, Hollande said, using the Arabic acronym for Islamic State.

Earlier on Saturday, Islamic State distributed an undated video threatening to attack France if bombings of its fighters continued. The group's foreign media arm, Al-Hayat Media Centre, made threats through several militants who called on French Muslims to carry out attacks.

"As long as you keep bombing you will not live in peace. You will even fear traveling to the market," said one of the militants, identified as Abu Maryam the Frenchman. Hollande said the attacks were "an act of war".

The location of the Islamic State fighters in the video was not clear and it was not possible to determine when it was filmed, but the message was unmistakable. The fighters, who appeared to be French citizens, sat cross-legged in a group wearing fatigues and holding weapons in what appeared to be a wooded area. The video showed the militants burning passports.

"Indeed you have been ordered to fight the infidel wherever you find him - what are you waiting for?," said Abu Maryam.

"Know that jihad in this time is obligatory on all."

Another militant, identified as Abu Salman the Frenchman, said: "There are weapons and cars available and targets ready to be hit. Even poison is available, so poison the water and food of at least one of the enemies of Allah."

"Terrorize them and do not allow them to sleep due to fear and horror," he added.

Foreign fighters who join Islamic State, the group which controls large swathes of Iraq and Syria, are seen as especially dangerous because Western passports enable them to live in and travel to Western countries undetected. Another militant in the video, identified as Abu Osama the Frenchman, appealed to Muslims living in France to head to Syria to wage jihad, in "a message from your French brothers".

"Jihad is the path of Allah You strengthen their economy and pay taxes which they use to fight us, and kill our sister, our women and our children," he said.

"Are you not embarrassed? Repent to your Lord and come join us. Because a day may come when the borders will be closed and you will be left only with tears and regret."

France declared a state of emergency after multiple attacks in the Paris area with firearms and bombs late Friday left more than 100 dead and scores wounded.

No claim of responsibility has surfaced. The city asked residents to stay home and closed several metro lines. French President Francois Hollande called an emergency cabinet meeting, declaring a state of emergency and closing the nation's borders.

"At this moment, unprecedented terrorist attacks are underway across the city of Paris," Hollande said before the meeting. He said military personnel had been deployed across the city.

These are the locations of the attacks in and around the French capital:

Le Bataclan

What appears to be the deadliest attack occurred at the popular Bataclan concert venue in the 11th Arrondissement, one of the most densely populated districts in Paris.

According to media reports, multiple gunmen dressed in black massacred more than 100 hostages with bombs and automatic weapons inside the theater.

Authorities said the siege at the theater ended late Friday and all of the gunmen were dead.

The attack took place during a concert by the U.S. rock group Eagles of Death Metal. Gunfire and multiple explosions could be heard near the concert hall, The Associated Press and Reuters reported.

The Bataclan is just a few hundred yards from the former offices of the magazine Charlie Hebdo. In January, gunmen forced their way into those offices, opened fire and fled, killing 10 journalists and two police officers and injuring several others.

Le Petit Cambodge and Le Carillon

About a half-mile from Bataclan, HuffPost France reported that at least one gunman opened fire outside the Petit Cambodge restaurant and the nearby Le Carillon cafe, both in the 10th Arrondissement. Dozens of people were reported to have been killed, according to the AP.

A reporter for France 24 tweeted these photos from the scene near Petit Cambodge:

Stade de France

At least three explosions were heard near the Stade de France, a stadium outside Paris, with reports that at least one of those was a suicide bombing.

One of the explosions was audible inside the stadium during a soccer match between France and Germany.

In the video above, the crowd cheers after the explosion and the announcer explains that he believes that the sound is "firecrackers being let off in and around the stadium."

“And actually," the announcer continues, "Germany’s buildup to this match was disrupted by a bomb scare at their hotel earlier on."

The German team was evacuated from their hotel in Paris Friday morning following an anonymous threat. By midday, the team was allowed to return, The Guardian reported.

Following the explosion outside the stadium, Hollande, who was attending the match, was evacuated.

Les Halles and the Louvre Museum

There were reports of additional shooting at Les Halls shopping mall in central Paris, and in the area near the famous Louvre Museum. It was unclear if anyone was killed or injured.

La Belle Equipe

Shots were reportedly fired in the area of this restaurant on Rue Charonne in the 11th Arrondissement. The toll wasn't immediately clear.

Statement by the President on the Situation in Paris

5:45 P.M. EST

THE PRESIDENT:  Good evening, everybody.  I just want to make a few brief comments about the attacks across Paris tonight.  Once again, we’ve seen an outrageous attempt to terrorize innocent civilians.  This is an attack not just on Paris, it’s an attack not just on the people of France, but this is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values that we share.

We stand prepared and ready to provide whatever assistance that the government and the people of France need to respond.  France is our oldest ally.  The French people have stood shoulder to shoulder with the United States time and again.  And we want to be very clear that we stand together with them in the fight against terrorism and extremism.

Paris itself represents the timeless values of human progress.  Those who think that they can terrorize the people of France or the values that they stand for are wrong.  The American people draw strength from the French people’s commitment to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness.  We are reminded in this time of tragedy that the bonds of liberté and égalité and fraternité are not only values that the French people care so deeply about, but they are values that we share.  And those values are going to endure far beyond any act of terrorism or the hateful vision of those who perpetrated the crimes this evening.

We’re going to do whatever it takes to work with the French people and with nations around the world to bring these terrorists to justice, and to go after any terrorist networks that go after our people.

We don’t yet know all the details of what has happened.  We have been in contact with French officials to communicate our deepest condolences to the families of those who have been killed, to offer our prayers and thoughts to those who have been wounded.  We have offered our full support to them.  The situation is still unfolding.  I’ve chosen not to call President Hollande at this time, because my expectation is that he’s very busy at the moment.  I actually, by coincidence, was talking to him earlier today in preparation for the G20 meeting.  But I am confident that I’ll be in direct communications with him in the next few days, and we’ll be coordinating in any ways that they think are helpful in the investigation of what’s happened.

This is a heartbreaking situation.  And obviously those of us here in the United States know what it’s like.  We’ve gone through these kinds of episodes ourselves.  And whenever these kinds of attacks happened, we’ve always been able to count on the French people to stand with us.  They have been an extraordinary counterterrorism partner, and we intend to be there with them in that same fashion.

I’m sure that in the days ahead we’ll learn more about exactly what happened, and my teams will make sure that we are in communication with the press to provide you accurate information.  I don’t want to speculate at this point in terms of who was responsible for this.  It appears that there may still be live activity and dangers that are taking place as we speak.  And so until we know from French officials that the situation is under control, and we have for more information about it, I don’t want to speculate.

Thank you very much.

PARIS:  Gunmen killed more than 120 people in a wave of attacks across Paris on Friday, shouting "Allahu akbar" as they massacred scores of diners and concert-goers and launched suicide attacks outside the national stadium.

Four black-clad gunmen wearing suicide vests and wielding AK-47s stormed into the Bataclan venue in eastern Paris and fired calmly and methodically at hundreds of screaming concert-goers.

At least 120 people were killed and 200 injured across six locations around the French capital, which is still reeling from jihadist attacks in January.

People hug on the street near the Bataclan concert hall following fatal attacks in Paris. (Reuters)

Investigators said at least eight attackers were dead by the end of the violence -- the bloodiest in Europe since the Madrid train bombings in 2004 -- with seven of them having blown themselves up.

Witnesses said the attackers at the Bataclan shouted "Allahu akbar" ("God is greatest") and blamed France's military intervention in Syria as they sprayed bullets into the crowd watching US rock band Eagles of Death Metal and took dozens hostage.

Three of the militants blew up their explosive vests as police stormed the venue, which lies just 200 metres (yards) from the former offices of Charlie Hebdo magazine that was targeted in January.

The fourth was hit by police fire and blew up as he fell.

"There was blood everywhere, corpses everywhere. We heard screaming. Everyone was trying to flee," said Pierre Janaszak, a radio presenter who attended the concert and hid with several others at the venue.

Witnesses said the attackers at the Bataclan shouted "Allahu akbar" ("God is greatest") and blamed France's military intervention in Syria.

Several nearby restaurants were also targeted, with reports of militants opening fire on Cambodian and Japanese restaurants, leaving many dead in a busy nightlife district.

In the north of the city, three more suicide bombers blew themselves up outside the Stade de France national stadium where France were playing Germany in an international football match, security sources said.

President Francois Hollande was attending the match and had to be hastily evacuated.

An eighth attacker blew himself up in Boulevard Voltaire near the concert venue, as the streets of the capital were filled with the sound of police sirens and convoys of ambulances shipping the injured to hospital.

'VERY CALM, VERY DETERMINED'

"Terrorist attacks of an unprecedented level are under way across the Paris region," Hollande said in an emotional televised message.

"It's a horror."

He declared a state of emergency across the entire country and cancelled his trip to this weekend's G20 summit in Turkey.

The bloodiest of the attacks was at the Bataclan, where police said around 100 people were killed.

"We heard so many gunshots and the terrorists were very calm, very determined," Julien Pearce, a reporter for France's Europe 1 radio, told CNN while the hostage crisis was still underway.

Other witnesses told French media how the attackers forced people to lie on the floor and then sprayed them with bullets, shooting at anyone who tried to flee.

Pearce said friends were still inside as he spoke.

"They are hiding in some kind of room in the dark and they text(ed) me, and they are very afraid, of course, and they are waiting for the police to intervene, but it's been over two hours now and this is terrible."

Hundreds of police had gathered outside and armed officers eventually stormed the venue at around 2335 GMT, accompanied by a series of explosions.

Police decided to launch the assault "very quickly because they were killing everyone," said a source close to the investigation.

'ATTACK ON ALL HUMANITY'

Extra 1,500 soldiers were mobilised to reinforce police in Paris, Hollande's office said, while mayor Anne Hidalgo urged residents to stay at home.

US President Barack Obama led a chorus of global condemnation, saying it was "an attack on all of humanity", and New York lit the World Trade Centre in the red, white and blue of the French flag.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker said they were "deeply shocked" by the attacks.

France has been on high alert since the attacks in January against Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket that left 17 dead.
